As food aid is mobilized in response to the global food price crisis, the international medical humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) warns that sending adult food to feed young children will not save them from the risk of malnutrition. Today MSF urged donors to ensure their aid includes special foods for young children.

In Escuintla, the Boxer team has turned the Escuela Santa Isabel into a primary-care facility.  Hundreds of patients have stood in line for care, some having traveled over four hours by foot.  The Boxer team set up a dental clinic, an optometry clinic, a primary-care center and an educational area, all of which featured HHS officers.  Including dental and optometry, the clinic is seeing approximately 600 patients a day.  The most-common medical conditions include upper respiratory infections and chronic diseases.  The number of prescriptions filled at the pharmacy set up by the Boxer team went from approximately 500 the first two days in Escuintla to over 1000 per day the next two days.  The number of pairs of eyeglasses distributed by the optometrists has concurrently increased, from 50 to 100, while referrals of cataract patients to the Boxer's on-board surgery team have remained constant at approximately three to five per day.  HHS dental professionals applied fluoride varnish to approximately 150 patients, as well as applied sealants and performed prophylaxis, restorations and extractions.

May 12, 2008 – U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) Michael O. Leavitt today began his third visit to the People's Republic of China with activities in the eastern coastal city of Shanghai.  The Secretary shared his vision for improving the safety of consumer products with more than 800 vendors, suppliers and executives of the Target Corporation, and he answered questions from the group.

May 13, 2008 – On the second day of a week-long visit to the People's Republic of China, U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) Michael O. Leavitt conitnued his visit to the port city of Shanghai.  The Secretary held discussions with his counterpart, the Honorable Chen Zhu, M.D., and expressed his condolences on behalf of the American people for the loss of life suffered as a consequence of the earthquake in Sichaun Province.  Secretary Leavitt offered assistance from the United States in the response to the tremor, as well as in the investigation and containment of the outbreaks of Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease in several Provinces.  The two sides reviewed the results of the annual meeting of the Steering Committee of the United States-China Collaborative Program on Emerging and Re-Emerging Infectious Diseases, which took place on May 10, 2008, and discussed plans to hold a joint Health-Care Forum before the next set of conversations under the United States-China Strategic Economic Dialogue, scheduled for June 2008.
