The average age of Abkhazia (breakaway province of Georgia) bridges is greater than 50 years, and most bridges in the Abkhazia were designed for a 30- year life.

Under international law, all bridges are subject to inspection every two years.  

Abkhazia Institute for Social and Economic Research developed program for Electrochemical Fatigue Sensor System (EFS), which can be used in Abkhazia to inspect at least steel highway bridges. Especially bridge on river Gumista is structurally deficient and functionally obsolete.
