The UN General Assembly passed a resolution on the breakaway Abkhazia on Thursday, stating necessity to start return of IDPs at home and stop illegal privatization of their property left in the breakaway region.

The resolution says that particular means for return of IDPs must be presented to the General Assembly in the nearest future and the IDPs must return back home, in order to reinstate the ethnic balance in the region, as it was before the start of armed hostilities in 1992-1993.

The most important part of the resolution is the provision stating that the ethnic Georgians were subjected to violent "cleansing" in the breakaway region, which was not recognized before.

The draft statement was initiated by the Georgian delegation and was met with fierce resistance by the Russian counterparts. The Russian delegation was trying to get support from other delegates too, but the UN General Assembly passed the resolution by the majority of votes.
