With a flourish, the head coach of Tianjin's volleyball team lit the flame cauldron at 11:10 Saturday morning, signaling the end of the two-day torch relay through the municipality.
Wang Baoquan served as the last of the 225 torchbearers who ran today's 12 kilometer route through the center of Tianjin. The designated path highlighted a modern city steeped in cultural traditions. Starting from Tianjin Olympic Center in the hands of first torchbearer Fan Yushu, the Olympic torch was paraded through 25 main streets of Heping district, Hexi district, Hedong district, Hebei district, Nankai district and Hongqiao district and carried across more than 7 bridges to arrive at its final destination of the day, Tianjin Auditorium. As one of the four municipal cities in China, Tianjin has provincial-level status. Northern China's largest coastal development city has jurisdiction over 15 districts and 3 counties, and is bordered by the Bohai Sea on the east and the Yan Mountain on the north. This afternoon, the sacred flame team will head to Sichuan province via charter plane to prepare for its tour of Guang'an on Sunday. |
