AC Milan won the European Super Cup for a record fifth time when they beat Sevilla 3-1 on Friday and both teams paid tribute to Sevilla midfielder Antonio Puerta, who died this week.
Champions League winners AC Milan prevailed in the curtain-raiser to the continental club season courtesy of second half goals by Filippo Inzaghi, Marek Jankulovski and Kaka.
UEFA Cup winners Sevilla, who won the trophy against Barcelona last year, had opened the scoring through Brazilian striker Renato. The players honoured Puerta's memory with a minute's silence. All were wearing black armbands and had Puerta's name at the bottom of their shirts.
Spanish football, and Sevilla in particular, has been stunned by the death of the versatile left-sided midfielder/defender who collapsed during his team's first league match of the season against Getafe last Saturday.
Puerta died on Tuesday at the age of 22 in a Seville hospital. |
