President Saakashvili addressed the new Parliament Featured

Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili took a speach at the opening session of the newly elected Parliament in Kutaisi and urged the future government to work together, especially in terms of Euro-Atlantic Integration of Georgia.

According to him, the election campaign was a "complicated, obscene and toxic, and, perhaps, from all sides", but now is the time to work together to "improve our agriculture, as we said, to continue our infrastructural progress, to continue health care, continue our transatlantic aspiring and European integration, and democratic development".

"Today is not the time for anger, revenge and regret. Now is the time for joint discussion, debate and of doing business", - he said.

At the session of the Parliament were members of existing and future government, including the candidate for Prime Minister - Bidzina Ivanishvili, who was sitting next to the Patriarch of Georgia Ilia II; together with other officials at the meeting were also the accredited in Georgia ambassadors.

"In addition, we need to work on the restoration of the territorial integrity of the de-occupation, to protect our sovereignty, not to fall into any trap arranged by an occupant at the territory of Georgia", - he said.

" To the parliamentary majority I wish not only to destroy or perish, in what I am sure that they do not want, but also to fulfill the promise to improve the standard of living that you have given to the people", - said Saakashvili in his speech.

«To the minority I wish first of all - you would become the opposition, which would help to the government when the government is right and will be constructive in opposition," - he continued - "But which will be completely irreconcilable and impatient when you do not agree and when you have your position in the conditions that you will never be the opposition in your country, do not want to go against your country and you will not enjoy the defeat of the country".

"Once again I want to make clear that this does not mean that we forget the differences in our views, and we all have to agree on such matters with which we will not agree and will not accept", - he said.

"We have different positions on economic policy, in the fight against crime and corruption, regional security, human rights, minority rights, in the direction of culture and foreign policy", - he said.

Then president spoke of the need that Parliament remained in Kutaisi. "Georgian Dream" hinted that, despite the fact that is lack of 15 members till the constitutional majority, it still intends to amend the Constitution to restore the parliament in Tbilisi.

"Transferring of the Parliament to Kutaisi, I want to say most of the new majority, so there was not a party decision and not a punitive measure against the capital. This is a part of a larger plan, which aims development and decentralization both of the authorities and institutions as to the whole country all had a chance to get involved and be connected to the work of these institutions", - he said.

"This Parliament is a symbol of the new of Georgia, which is radically different from the old Parliament building, built by Lavrenty Beria, which is associated with a number of bad things in the history of Georgia, but more than good look, it is a symbol and the institution of equality, which should reach the Georgian society", - Saakashvili said.

"This is a symbol and an instrument of progress of secondary once cities of our country. Moreover, with accelerated paces should develop the local political life", - he said.

In terms of further decentralization of the country, President Saakashvili also initiated direct election of mayors and heads of local administrations and regional governors.

He also promised that he will work with the future Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili in terms of Euro-Atlantic Integration of Georgia.

"In the processes associated with the EU and NATO, I personally offered cooperation to the future Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili", - Saakashvili said.

It was the first time that Mikheil Saakashvili, in his public speech mentioned Ivanishvili by name and surname.

"The EU and NATO are important topics for our country, which are higher than the political differences between us. The same can be said about restoring the territorial integrity and the issues of our defense against external threats", - Saakashvili said.
